 Aluminum Production
Harbison-Walker specially engineers products to meet the specific demands of pot linings, carbon bake furnaces, casthouses, and melting and holding furnaces.
Aluminum production can be divided into two categories: primary and secondary production. Primary aluminum plants, where ore is smelted in to metal, utilize a wide range of refractory products. Harbison-Walker products like KALA and CRYLA are designed specifically to meet the very demanding needs of carbon baking furnaces.
Other products, such as KALAKAST AR, HARBIDE, and KAST-O-LITE 22 are excellent performers in electrolytic pots. Secondary aluminum plants have several purposes including alloying metal from the primary plant, and recycling scrap and used aluminum such as beverage containers (UBC’s). Harbison-Walker manufactures the most diverse line of products designed specifically to serve the needs of the entire secondary aluminum plant. Brick products like ALCOR, CORAL-P, and DV-38 have been cast-house standards for many years. Monolithic products from the ARMORKAST, ULTRA-EXPRESS, VERSAFLOW and GREENKLEEN product families have proven track records in aluminum melting equipment.
In addition to the traditional, dense, aluminum-resistant product line, Harbison-Walker manufactures a full line of complementary products for auxiliary aluminum processing equipment. GREENLITE 45 L AL is a lightweight castable, ideal for cruces, troughs and insulated back-up linings, NARCON ZRAL is a zircon-containing castable with exceptional corundum resistance. VERSAFLOW THERMAX AL is a vitreous silica castable, designed for troughs and other thermal shock and abrasion prone areas.
Ferrous Foundries
Harbison-Walker Refractories Companyoffers a complete line of refractory solutions for all application areas of ferrous foundries. The trend of refractory development for ferrous foundries has been toward higher technology products, such as denser brick, low-cement and cement-free castables, and unique monolithic maintenance materials. H-W’s line of densified matrix brick, such as KORUNDAL XD DM and RUBY DM, NOVACON cement-free castables, and graphitic monolithics such as NARCARB ZP PLASTIC and D-CAST TRC OR CASTABLE are established industry standards for ferrous foundries. H-W also offers a complete line of basic brick and monolithic products tailored to the needs of steel foundries and specialty metals producers.
Typical applications include primary melting equipment such as cupolas and electric arc furnaces; horizontal and vertical channel induction furnaces; all designs of metal transfer and pouring ladles; argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) units; resistance rod furnaces; pressure pour furnaces; and porous stirring elements.

Copper Production
Harbison-Walker manufactures and supplies a full line of refractories to support the most demanding copper industry applications. We specially engineer products to meet the specific lining demands of primary smelting, anode, and secondary copper furnaces as well as copper converters.
Refractory Solutions are available in a variety of leading brick and castable formulations that combat high temperatures and the erosive and corrosive effects of slag. In primary smelting vessels, the use of direct-bonded chrome-magnesite refractories like NARMAG HNF 27 and NARMAG HNF 31 are used. Anode furnaces require the use of low porosity, low silica refractories also. TBRC's require the use of high purity, high strength, fused grain refractories like NARMAG FG . Areas that are difficult to brick in these furnaces often use alumina-chrome monolithic refractories like phosphate bonded RUBY PLASTIC 20 or other castables.
